Rockwool Insulation Installation


Installation of thermal insulation products is one of the major effective parameters in saving energy and reduction in energy consumption, as wrong installation or not fully comply with the essential measures can cause in forming thermal bridge or damages to the insulation products so which the insulation efficiency is reduced substantially or the working life period of the products are decreased.


Most of rockwool insulation products are presented in the market with an external jacketing or cladding which acts as vapor barrier, in most cases. The external jacketing can be aluminum foils, craft-papers or plastic covers. In addition, some of the products are presented with wire mesh which simplifies the installation process.


During installation process, major considerations should be attended to acceptable heat flow, acceptable noise control and moisture transmission mechanisms. The fibrous structure of the rockwool results in air encapsulation inside the structure and eventually provides acceptable heat and noise transfer control. However, the very same structure is sensitive toward the moisture and can not withstand vapor permeation. Therefore, external jacketing is applied as vapor barriers. Rockwool products which are installed inside components should have plastic covers. The products installed outdoor, can have external jacketing as aluminum foil or craft paper. Specifically, for process or transfer pipelines, aluminum foils is the most common external jacket.




Which products should install for what applications?

Arman Ayegh Espdana suggests each product for specific applications:

* For pipe insulations, up to 16” in size, the preformed pipe sectional insulations are recommended. For greater sizes, mattress insulations are applicable for medium process temperature and blanket insulations are applicable for high temperatures.

* For insulating the walls, roofs ad floors, rockwool panels are applicable. Rockwool panels have high density with standard dimensions and easy installation, are most appropriate for such applications. For insulating attics or complicate geometries, loose fill rockwool is suitable.

* For insulating workshop ceilings, mattress products are used as they have less density respective to panels and blanket products so which no extra load is applied to the structure.

* For insulating very large reservoirs and tanks, depending on process temperature and geometry, mattress insulations, blanket insulations and panel insulations can be applied.

* For insulating industrial and processing equipment with complex geometries, conventionally loose rockwool with carbon wire textile or fire-retardant textile is used. The equipment is fully covered by fire-retardant or carbon wire textile and is filled by loose rockwool. Depending on geometry and shape of the equipment, panel or mattress products can also be used.


Walls to be insulation in buildings

* Ceilings: no matter if it is the ceiling between levels or final roof. As rockwool products act as acoustic insulation as well as thermal insulation, insulating between levels, no only prevent thermal lose through roofs and heat transfer upward the building, but also improves acoustic performance of the levels as well.

* External walls: the term external walls refers to any wall with sides with any place with no heat control requirements. In another word, external walls are no limited to exterior walls and facet walls of the building, but also include garage, parking lot and storage room walls as well.

* Foundation perimeter: includes all external perimeter of external structure of the foundation. This insulation extends from foundation into the ground.

* If acoustic control is required, interior walls are needed to be insulated.


Rockwool panels which are installed over the walls or exterior spaces, are attached to the surface by studs or installed between structure beams. The blanket and mattress products are unfolded over the surface or folded around the pipes and attached together by rivet, studs and screws. Insulations with aluminum foils should have a minor overlap to attach perfectly. The overlap edges are put over each other and attach normally by screws or rivet. Preformed pipe insulations have the easiest installation process; however, they need experienced insulating operator for a perfect sealing by tar and fire-retardant textile.
