Basics in Installation of PUR/PIR

Correct installation of insulation is considered as a prominent factor in high efficiency of mechanical insulation systems. Properly insulation installation has significant advantages, included but not limited to:

  • Securing the highest efficiency in energy saving
  • Reduced consumed insulation materials and disposal
  • Reduced installation time and increased saving in time investment and eventually reduced insulating costs
  • Carrying protection and precaution measures out so which personnel protection is assured
  • Avoiding mechanical damages to insulation products and avoiding critical cracks, failures and voids and consequently preventing undesirable thermal bridges


General principles which substantially should be attended in PUR/PIR insulation installation include:

  • Avoid extensive pressure on insulation materials so which the nominal thickness is decreased.
  • The surface which is to be insulated should be quite clean and empty of moistures and condensation.
  • All grooves, cracks and interfaces should be sealed perfectly to avoid any gaseous or liquid leakage.
  • Avoid unwanted thermal bridges between structural elements.


Installation techniques and methods of PUR/PIR is an extensive topic, enveloping both experience and knowledge. Covering such extensive topic here is not appropriate and only the basic rules have been emphasized.

Note 2: PUR/PIR products which are presented in factory packages, do not possess any kind of health hazard. However, if products are exposed to direct flame of extensive heat, they might rise off toxic gases and fumes. Therefore, it is important to avoid heat-generating processes such as welding, cutting with flame, heated element and etc.


Note 3: permitted machining processes, such as drilling, CNC cutting and machining, produce dust. Thus utilization of protective masks, gloves and goggles are recommended. The dust should be cleaned by vacuum.


Cutting of Polyurethane / Polyisocyanurate

Do not use hot tools for cutting purposes. The best tool for cutting PUR/PIR is saw, disc or manual. For precise or complicate geometries, CNC cutting can be used. Use disc saw only for big thicknesses. Wire-cut processes can not be used for PUR/PIR, as polyurethane products are substantially non-conductive.


Drilling of Polyurethane / Polyisocyanurate

Normal drilling machines, manual or radial, can be used for drilling purposes of insulation products. The tool’s tip should be conical (commercial drills) and it is recommended to use low rotational speed. Stop drilling after few successive holes, in order to let the drill tip cool.


Sealants and Mastics for Polyurethane / Polyisocyanurate Insulations

There are various sealants and mastics are applicable for PUR/PIR insulation products. For further information, please visit mastics section. Sealing is one of the most important steps in installation as if it is not conducted properly, the thermal leakage can easily occur.


Pipe and Tube Insulation

For small and common size pipes, pre-formed half-pipe-section insulation products are used. For very large pipes, smaller pipe-sections are used so which each covers a particular perimeter of the pipe or injection foam is implemented.

For insulating angles, T-shapes, flanges and other connections, pre-formed insulation products can be used; or board and panel products can used so they cover the entire perimeter of the connection in box shape and the intermediate medium is filled with another insulating material, like disposal chipped PUR/PIR insulations or fiber-glass.

For complicated shapes and equipment, the panel products can be used around the entire equipment, forming an insulating box. The intermediate medium is filled with other insulating materials, like disposal chipped PUR/PIR insulations or fiber-glass.

For small size pipes, the factory jacketing is sufficient as external jacketing. The outer edges of the jacket are overlapped and stud together. For bigger sizes, bands and screws are required.

For pipelines with process temperatures lower than ambient temperature, the grooves should be perfectly sealed with proper mastics to avoid condensation. In addition, the pipes should be resistant to corrosion.

If the insulation is to be installed in outdoor spaces, it is strongly recommended to use external metallic jacketings - mostly aluminum foils. The aluminum foils should comply with technical specifications of ASTM B209.

Steel bands are used for external jacketings. If vapor retardant has been installed on surface of the insulation, it should be noted that no screw, stud or bolts which can penetrate through vapor retardant cover, should be used.


Wall Insulation

Walls and huge tanks can be insulated by PUR/PIR insulating panels. Despite the fact that polyurethane and polyisocyanurate are mostly used for pipelines, equipment, tanks and refinery and petrochemical complexes and cryogenic applications, PUR/PIR insulations can be used in residential structures as well. Panel installation of walls is pretty easy, using normal studs and screws.
